Genz and Cosmetic Surgery
22 Dec

Generation Z, also known as "digital natives," is composed of those born between 1997 and 2012. Generation Z is immersed in the digital environment. For example, having the internet with them 24/7, using filters on their smartphones/cameras, as well as providing them with a complete re-evaluation/understanding of beauty.

For the previous generations, cosmetic surgery was often the topic of secretive conversation, many times in a "hushed tone." For generation Z, this topic has changed the narrative completely. For this generation, cosmetic surgery is no longer caonsidered a taboo subject or source of shame. Instead, they view it as an extension of their self-care routine, a means of self-expression, and the ability to be true to oneself.

While younger patients are increasingly becoming more common in our clinic, it is evident that cosmetic surgery and generation Z's relationship to it is different than the previous generations. Rather than being driven by the desire to "fix" any imperfections, generation Z wants to create their own identity. Therefore, we will take a closer look at the ways that this generation is shaping the medical aesthetics industry.

1. The Rise of the "Tweakment"

The term "Tweakment" has taken centre-stage for today's generation of Beauty Lovers, as opposed to the previous two generations, to emphasise subtle non-surgical treatments that provide natural enhancement, versus drastic changes that were often irreversible due to the advances made by various industries in these decades.

In essence, Generation Z is embracing a more refined approach to cosmetic treatments (my face but better), rather than the aggressive nature associated with the previous generation (the 1970s to early 2010s). This trend includes:

  • Lip filler: Used to create hydration/symmetry, rather than a huge amount of volume.
  • Baby Botox: Smaller doses are injected to gradually relax the facial muscles to minimise the formation of lines but prevent the face from becoming 'frozen.'
  • Jawline Contouring: Use of fillers to create a sharper jawline profile.

Ultimately, Generation Z is trying to achieve a fresh and 'snatched' appearance as opposed to looking 'done'.

2. Prevention Over Correction ("Pre-juvenation")

Generational Z has now become the most informed when it comes to skincare. Through online education, they have been able to recognise the benefits of preventing skin damage before it occurs. In addition this is the reason why there has been a tremendous push towards Pre-Juvination, whereby individuals in their early 20's start to perform non-invasive techniques to delay their skin from showing signs of aging.

Most young patients view procedures such as chemical peels, laser facials and preventative Botox as being part of their regular regime (gym, dental). They do not wait for a deep wrinkle to develop - they actively make efforts to eliminate its formation in the first place.

3. The Social Media Double Edge Sword

Gen Z and cosmetic surgery have become a hot topic of conversation due to social media. Social platforms (e.g TikTok, Instagram) have made it more accessible for anyone to gain beauty knowledge. At the same time, it has created the 'filter effect'.

Young minds are now accustomed to seeing a filtered version of their own faces with the aid of beauty filters that smooth the skin, narrow the nose and plump the lips. As a result, they have developed a greater self-consciousness about their image (particularly due to the zoom boom). Thus, although young people have an abundance of resources to learn about different procedures, including watching detailed recovery videos, they are also setting their expectations based upon the filter effect and therefore may be unrealistic in their desires and requests.

4. Authenticity and Self-Care

The coolest thing about the current generation (Gen Z) is that they view cosmetic surgery as being about Body Positivity and Mental Health first, and only secondarily about fitting in with the ideals of Celebrities or Culture. The focus for Gen Z is on empowerment; by changing an area of our body that has made them self-conscious, such as a hump on the nose (dorsal) or acne scars, they are aligning the outside with how they feel on the inside - that is confidence - and the goal is not to look like a celebrity, but to be comfortable with our own appearance.

Evaluating the Confusion and The Importance of Finding Qualified Professionals

Social media provides excellent sources of inspiration; however, social media is not a location to get reputable / medical advice. Trends seen on social media are viral (for example, the "fox eye" trend, or the "chiseled jaw" craze) and are continuously changing. But a person’s face is not temporary.

With Gen Z being bombarded with an overload of info (including incorrect info), it is important for them to find a Top Cosmetic Surgeon who can offer a grounded, ethical approach. The right ethical Top Cosmetic Surgeon will not endorse every trend; rather, the ethical Top Cosmetic Surgeon will conduct an analysis of the patient’s anatomy, listen to the patient's goals, and offer an educated understanding of what will provide the best appearance for the patient in the future.
