Gaining excessive weight causes the skin to stretch to accommodate the fat and in the process loses its elasticity. When this fat is lost after weight loss program or bariatric surgery; the skin cannot retract back and hangs loose over areas of fat loss, giving an unsightly appearance to the body. Apart from the appearance, this loose skin creates problems with hygiene and skin rashes. Most importantly, the promise of improved body image after successful weight loss is not achieved. The areas most likely to be involved are the arms, buttocks, thighs, tummy area and groin. Therefore, to fully enjoy the results of excessive weight loss, it should be followed by body contouring surgery.
Body contouring surgery involves removing the excess skin and tightening and redraping the remaining over the body and suturing it in place. If any pockets of fat are remaining, they can be removed at the same time using liposuction technique. This is done under general anaesthesia and requires 2-4 days stay in hospital. A drain (fine tube) is usually left under the skin for about 24 hours to drain blood and fluid.
Your doctor will prescribe analgesia for pain. The bruising and swelling will take a couple of weeks to settle. It is recommended to take 2 to 4 weeks off work to recover. This will depend on the area and extent of surgery, so discuss this with your surgeon. It may take a few months to fully appreciate the results of the procedure.
The procedure may be called by various names depending on the area of the body involved, eg. Butt lift, thigh lift, upper body lift, upper arm lift, belt lipectomy etc.
Body contouring surgery will enable you to enjoy the success of your weight loss program and improve your body image and self esteem.
