The flaps of skin on either side of the vaginal
opening is called the labia minora. In some women, these can be larger and
irregular. Surgery done to reduce the size of these, is called labiaplasty.
The are several reasons why women may want labiaplasty. This may be purely
cosmetic, to make the flaps more regular and smaller. In some cases the
large flaps of skin may cause discomfort, and labiaplasty may help to
improve this.
The women should be counseled carefully. It is normal for the labial minora
to be irregular and causes no harm to the women.
It can be done under local or general anaesthesia. The main complications
include bleeding and infection. Over resection can cause scarring, leading
to pain and discomfort during sexual intercourse. You may need to take about
a week off to allow the swelling to settle. Sexual intercourse and use of a
tampon may be resumed in 4 to 6 weeks. Your surgeon will be able to guide
you on your post operative care.
